Representative leads effort to recognize Police Week in Michigan

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz this week paid tribute to the dedication, sacrifice, and service of Michigan’s law enforcement officers by leading the House in adopting a resolution to declare May 11 to 17, 2025, as Police Week in Michigan,

“Every time a police officer puts on their uniform, they face the unknown to keep us safe,” said Schmaltz, R-Jackson. “This resolution expresses the deep appreciation we feel for their courage, integrity, and willingness to serve, even in the most dangerous situations.”

Schmaltz’s resolution mirrors the national observance of Police Week, established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to honor fallen officers and support those who continue to serve. It acknowledges the nearly 17,000 uniformed police officers in Michigan, who serve in more than 600 local, county, and state departments, as well as the families who support them.

The resolution also honors the memory of the 165 law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty nationwide in 2024. Their names are forever engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Schmaltz emphasized the importance of public appreciation for law enforcement, particularly in a time when the job has become more difficult and dangerous.

“Our communities lean on police officers during the hardest moments — when chaos hits, when lives are at risk, and when order needs to be restored,” Schmaltz said. “They respond with professionalism and bravery when others need help the most. Police Week gives us the opportunity to recognize their daily sacrifices and show our respect in a meaningful way.”
