House Appropriations Chair Rep. Ann Bollin, R-Brighton Township, issued the following statement after today’s Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference:
“Michigan’s economy remains strong, and the data presented proves that our state has not seen a major economic impact from federal tariffs. The economists also noted that today’s economy is better insulated from international instability than it was decades ago. These are encouraging signs. The work we have done to make sure taxpayer dollars are invested in the priorities of Michigan families is producing results. As budget negotiations continue, we must stay the course with a responsible approach that focuses on long-term priorities instead of growing government for the sake of growing government.
“We knew that returning more money to workers, seniors, and families through the tax relief we negotiated last year — including no taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security income — would scale back state revenue collections. That was part of the plan from the very beginning. Michigan families deserve to keep more of the money they earn, and we must continue budgeting with taxpayers in mind.
“We also made important changes last year to ensure taxes paid at the gas pumps are directed toward roads and infrastructure, which was always expected to reduce projected sales tax collections. That agreement reflected a deliberate decision to prioritize long-term infrastructure funding and focus taxpayer dollars on core responsibilities instead of wasteful spending and political pork projects.
“There are some serious long-term challenges Michigan cannot ignore. Our school-aged population is declining and workforce participation is being impacted by lower birthrates and an aging population. If we want long-term economic strength, Michigan must do more to attract job creators, families and workers to our state and create an environment where people want to build their future here.
“As we continue the budget process, our focus remains on investing in the priorities that matter most to Michigan residents: a fiscally responsible and sustainable budget that focuses on literacy, public safety, infrastructure, and healthcare for our most vulnerable residents. We will also continue working to cut waste, fraud, and abuse in state government so taxpayers can have confidence their dollars are being spent wisely and effectively.”
