State Rep. Ken Borton, of Gaylord, today issued the following statement after the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) approved a pair of permits needed for the Line 5 tunnel underneath the Straits of Mackinac. In its announcement, EGLE said the tunnel project could be completed in compliance with state law:

“This tunnel to house Line 5 is vital to our state and regional economies. It will provide fuel and heat to businesses across northern Michigan and allow people to heat their homes – all while protecting our Great Lakes. I hope this is a sign the governor realizes the importance of this project and the need for it to go forward.

“The tunnel is a safe, sound solution for Line 5. We have not heard realistic alternatives. Transporting that much fuel via truck is dangerous, impractical and would really be tough on our roads. The chance for a large-scale accident impacting people and our ecosystem wouldn’t go away in that scenario.

“I applaud the decision to approve these permits. I hope it starts to put an end to the campaign rhetoric regarding Line 5 and emphasizes the importance of real solutions.”
